Designer/Maker: Milgrim (House of Milgrim, established by Sally Milgrim)
Date: Circa 1940s–1950s (Mid-20th Century)
Culture: American
Material: Wool felt (likely doeskin felt); natural feathers (pheasant/game bird plume); internal grosgrain ribbon; likely wire internal structure
Description:
A structured, close-fitting hat likely intended to be worn tilted at an angle on the head. The base material is a pale green/grey wool felt. A striking, long plume of natural game bird feathers (displaying iridescence in browns, greens, and greys) is integrated into the design, sweeping around the side or front of the hat. The internal structure includes a grosgrain ribbon band. This style reflects the elegance of mid-century formal wear, which often used dramatic lines and natural embellishments. The item shows signs of wear and damage, including spotting/discoloration on the felt and some disarray in the feather plume.
Associated Information:
Label identifies “Milgrim,” a renowned American design house known for couture and ready-to-wear lines, which also created accessories and hats for department stores and designed inaugural gowns for First Ladies Florence Harding, Grace Coolidge, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
The hat was donated by Breene Wright.
