1918: The End of WWI and the Onset of the Spanish Flu Epidemic
The Friends of the Truro Meeting House fall, 2018 newsletter has a wonderful article about the end of World War I and the onset of the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918. As reported by Carlotta Dyer Zilliax,
“troops and their equipment came home with the deadly Spanish Flu, which spread to non-combatants here. In October of 1918 the remains of Mrs. Mary Rogers, 29, who died of flu in Brighton, were brought home to Truro’s Sacred Heart Cemetery. Also in that month Truro’s schools, libraries and churches were closed to check the spread of the disease.”
