The Lure of the Local: Truro Motifs in early 20th century art work from local collections

Maura Coughlin is Professor of Visual Studies in the
Department of English and Cultural Studies at Bryant University in Smithfield RI. For the past decade, her research and publications have focused on the
visual and material culture of 19th century Brittany and Normandy, with a particular interest in shoreline ecology, fishing communities, artist colonies and the religious practices of pilgrimage and mourning. Her illustrated talk will take artworks in the current exhibition at the Highland House Museum ( ‘As They Saw It: Artists in Truro’ ) as starting points in a transatlantic dialogue about representing rural life in France and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
