Assistant to the Director

The Truro Historical Society (THS) is located in Truro MA on beautiful Cape Cod.  The THS is responsible for the Highland House Museum and the Cobb Archives.  The position is for 40 hours per week that commences on or about May 14ththrough September 30, 2018.  The Museum is open to the public, Monday – Saturday from June 1stthrough September 30th.  Candidates are needed to be available through the entire season. This is a position of responsibility that requires excellent people and social skills and computer proficiency.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director, staff and exhibitions committee in setting up displays and exhibitions and other tasks as required
  • Support the Collections Committee with accessions and inventory documentation
  • Assist the Director and staff in researching and development of new exhibitions
  • Support the events committee with promoting events
  • Attending and supporting activities associated with special events, evening speaker programs or exhibition openings, if required by the Director
  • Meet and greet visitors to the Museum
  • Support the Docents which involves, visitor registration and inquiries
  • Share responsibility with the director and staff in daily opening and/or closing the museum

Ideal Candidate will have the following:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills to meet/greet Museum visitors of all ages and provide direction and information
  • Ability to interact with and support the Volunteer Coordinator and work with the volunteer staff
  • Excellent computer skills are a requirement
  • Museum or education research experience is a plus but not a requirement

The Cobb Archive houses maps, charts, books, photographs, family memorabilia, and other historical documents. This 1912 building was designed in the Arts and Craft style and  originally served as the town’s first public library. Located in Truro Center, the Cobb Archive is accessible to the public for research.
