Tribal Leadership in the Climate Crisis with Dr. Casey Thornbrugh

Truro Historical Society Welcomes  Dr. Casey Thornbrugh of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

Dr. Thornbrugh will discuss climate change impacts and adaptation, and the challenges faced by Tribal Nations and Indigenous Communities, with an emphasis on East Coast and coastal regions.

“Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities have observed climate changes since time immemorial. Today, anthropogenic climate change and the broader Climate Crisis—compounded by institutional barriers—present unique challenges. Despite this, Tribal Nations are leading efforts in climate adaptation and resilience.” – Dr. Casey Thornbrugh.

Dr. Thornbrugh is a citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and a geographer with a background in climate science. He has served as Tribal Climate Science Liaison for United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. (USET), in coordination with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Climate Resilience Branch (BIA-TCR) and the Northeast and Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Centers (NE/SE CASC). In this role, he supported Tribal Nations by providing climate science resources, identifying research needs, and assisting with adaptation planning. He was also a co-author of the Northeast Chapter of the Fifth National Climate Assessment. Dr. Thornbrugh lives in Mashpee, Massachusetts with his wife, Sarah, and their two children.
