Garment Description:
An exceptional, hand-crocheted heirloom bedspread, executed in the popular “Marguerite Sunflower Popcorn” motif pattern, a classic design first published in the 1910s but widely replicated and popular through the mid-20th century.
-
Construction: The bedspread is constructed entirely of a repeating, large hexagonal motif. Each motif features a highly three-dimensional design achieved using two distinct stitches:
-
The “Sunflower/Daisy” Center: Created with tightly worked stitches to form a dense, central floral element.
The “Popcorn” Stitch: A highly textured, raised stitch (a cluster of crochet stitches worked into one point) used to create the central “popcorn” texture and define the radiating “petal” segments of the hexagon.
-
-
Material: Constructed from fine mercerized cotton thread, giving the piece a substantial weight and firm texture.
-
Color: Ecru or Pale Cream.
-
Assembly: Hundreds of individual motifs are seamlessly joined to create the final rectangular shape of the bedspread.
-
Provenance Note: This piece represents a significant investment of time, characteristic of the labor-intensive handcrafting popular during the Depression and World War II years.
