Josephine Hopper – An Artistic Force in Her Own Right with Elizabeth Colleary
Josephine Nivison Hopper, wife of famed painter Edward Hopper, was an accomplished artist whose works were thought to be primarily lost. While visiting Florida in 2000. Elizabeth Colleary met with Arthayer Sanborn, a friend of the Hoppers, who revealed a large box of watercolors bequeathed to him by Josephine.
Elizabeth Colleary, an art historian and renowned Hopper scholar, discovered more of Mrs. Hoppers’s work stored at the Whitney Museum in New York. Ms Colleary is a sought-after speaker on the life and works of Josephine Hopper and the Hoppers’ sometimes tumultuous relationship here in Truro.
