#26 Kyle Ringquist

“From the Bottom of the Sea Looking Up”

Kyle Ringquist is renowned for his bold and creative reverse painting methods. People sometimes ask, “Why do you paint this way?” “Because it is aesthetically beautiful. It’s a like a jewel for your wall.” Whether the subject is painted from life or from within, I render my compositions before painting, and use that as a map to paint. I use many different methods to capture the layers onto the plexiglas, painting the layers foreground to background, on the backside of what the viewer sees. Each layer of color influences the following layers of colors. The end result is a painting of brilliant colors. I also adapt this process, and carry it further so the reverse painting can be transferred to another surface.
The plate you see was reverse painted on high density polyethylene, casted and transferred to the plate, and finished with resin. The vertical drips around the edge of the plate are intentional . . . an accent from the idea of looking up at a boat from under water.
My signature is the single flower painting. The entire flower is painted with my finger. I wouldn’t be able to achieve the sophisticated elements that compose the flower with a paint brush. This is all possible with mixing the paint with the appropriate mediums to get these certain effects.
The Kyle Ringquist Gallery has been an active studio in Provincetown for 16 years. Kyle Ringquist’s work has been showcased in galleries in Palm Springs, CA, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Providence, RI, and New York City. Last year, the Kyle Ringquist Gallery was awarded the Silver Award for best galleries on Cape Cod. The artist can be found painting in his studio and gallery in Provincetown, at 349 Commercial street, painting and showing his work and accepting commissions based on his studies.
